History
Dongling District was formed in 1964 from 14 rural people's communes of three city districts. A science park set up at Nanhu (南湖) in 1988 became one of China's first national high-tech zones in 1991, and the Hunnan New Area followed in 2001. In 2010 the part of Dongling south of the river was merged with the new area, Qipanshan was added in 2013, and the district took the name Hunnan in 2014.
The older past shows in its listed sites. The district government counts 145 immovable cultural relics; the Fuling tomb and the Shitaizishan mountain fortress (石台子山城) are national protected sites, and beacon towers at Nandatai (南大台) and Ninglu (宁路) are on the provincial list.
What to see
Fuling (福陵), also called the East Mausoleum (东陵), is the tomb of Nurhaci (努尔哈赤), founder of the Later Jin, and his wife Empress Xiaocigao (孝慈高皇后). Its approach runs from a stone archway and main red gate along a sacred way with stone animals to a 108-step stone staircase. It joined the UNESCO World Heritage listing of the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in 2004.
The Shenyang Expo Garden (沈阳世博园) is a 5A scenic area, and Qipanshan is a 4A resort area. The district government lists old temples such as Chaoyang Temple (朝阳寺) and Xinglong Temple (兴隆寺), and Chinese Wikipedia names a Manchu folk village among its sights. The Liaoning Provincial Museum, the provincial science centre and library, the Liaoning Opera House and the Liaoning Ballet are based here.
Getting oriented
Two major transport hubs lie in the district: Taoxian International Airport (桃仙国际机场) and Shenyang South Station (沈阳南站), where the Harbin–Dalian, Shenyang–Dandong and Beijing–Shenyang lines meet. The Hun River is crossed by nine links. University campuses include Northeastern University, Shenyang Jianzhu University and Shenyang Ligong University, alongside the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shenyang Institute of Automation and Institute of Metal Research.
