Temples among the peaks
Mount Hua combines granite cliffs with a long Daoist presence. Yuquan Temple (玉泉院), Dongdao Temple (东道院) and Zhenyue Palace (镇岳宫) are among its religious buildings. The mountain also preserves cliff inscriptions and paths cut into steep rock, including Qianchi Chuang (千尺幢) and Baichi Gorge (百尺峡).
A temple facing the mountain
Xiyue Temple (西岳庙), five kilometres north of Mount Hua, was founded in the reign of Emperor Wu of Han (汉武帝) for worship of the mountain deity. It faces south towards the mountain. Haoling Hall (灏灵殿) stands on a broad projecting terrace, with glazed roof tiles and a surrounding corridor.
