A fortress above a river bend

Yongning Mountain Ancient Fortress (永宁山古寨) occupies a hill 28 kilometres south of the county seat, within Yongning Town (永宁镇). Water surrounds three sides, and the Luo River (洛河) follows an S-shaped bend below. By the Northern Song period, the hill served as a military stronghold controlling the old river route. Later residents built a fortified refuge here to escape warfare.

Liu Zhidan’s early years

Liu entered the school on Yongning Mountain in 1919. In 1928, he and his colleagues established a Communist Party branch there. Elsewhere in the county, the Bao’an Revolutionary Site (保安革命旧址) and Liu Zhidan Martyrs’ Cemetery (刘志丹烈士陵园) preserve further associations with this revolutionary history.
