Longkou 龙口市

Longkou (龙口市), called Huang County (黄县) until 1986, is a county-level city administered by Yantai (烟台) in the north-west of the Jiaodong Peninsula (胶东半岛), on the south shore of the Bohai. It takes its name from its harbour, Longkou Port (龙口港), which also gave its name to the mung-bean vermicelli shipped from here.

Setting and landscape

The land rises from a coastal plain in the north-west to low hills in the south-east, and the city has about 68 kilometres of coast. Zhaoyuan (招远) lies to the south, Penglai (蓬莱区) to the east and Qixia (栖霞市) to the south-east. Besides the central town, the built-up areas are the port city, Donghai (东海) and Nanshan (南山).

History

The state of Lai (莱国), a Dongyi state, was founded here at the end of the Shang, and under the Zhou this area was its centre. Huang County was first set up under the Qin, and in the Eastern Han it was the seat of Donglai commandery (东莱郡). From the Tang it belonged to Dengzhou (登州), and in 1986 the county was abolished and replaced by Longkou city.

What to see

The Ding family mansion (丁氏故宅) on Huangcheng West Street (黄城西大街) belonged to a branch of the 'Ding Baiwan' (丁百万, 'Millionaire Ding') clan, which rose in the Qianlong reign and was once the richest family in Shandong. It covers 15,000 square metres, with four courtyard compounds, among them Aifu Hall (爱福堂) and Chongjian Hall (崇俭堂), and a garden: 55 brick-and-timber buildings with gabled roofs. It became a national key cultural relic in 1996.

Other sights listed for the city are the Nanshan scenic area (南山风景区) with Nanshan Chan Temple (南山禅寺), Jimu Island (屺姆岛) scenic area, the Xu Gong shrine (徐公祠), the Donghai tourist resort (东海旅游度假区) and the Guicheng (归城) ancient city site. Longkou Port's passenger terminal is one of the Bohai ferry piers.

Food and local products

Longkou vermicelli (龙口粉丝) is fine, translucent noodle made from mung beans. The craft belongs to neighbouring Zhaoyuan, where it was recorded on the national intangible heritage list in 2014; the name dates from 1860, when Zhaoyuan vermicelli began to be loaded onto ships at Longkou. Local waters yield prawns, swimming crabs, sea cucumber, abalone and scallops, and orchards grow pears, apples, strawberries, grapes, cherries, peaches, apricots and plums.
