The forested heights
Heizhugou lies in the town of the same name, across elevations from 1,500 to 4,288 metres. Old trees and arrow bamboo grow among rock formations, while springs and waterfalls cut through the mountainous landscape. Rain and mist are characteristic of the area.
Layered buckwheat pancakes
Buckwheat pancakes (荞麦烙饼) begin with flour mixed into a thick batter using warm water. The batter is spread in an iron pan and cooked slowly, sometimes with a little lard to prevent sticking. Cooked pancakes are stacked over subsequent ones to form a layered cake, then cut into quarters or eighths. The county government describes the result as both crisp and soft.
