Setting and landscape
Mountains cover 99 per cent of the district's 598 square kilometres, and altitude ranges from 530 metres to 3,321 metres, a drop of 2,700 metres. The district government calls Jinkouhe an old "Third Front" (三线) area and a remote Yi (彝族) district; two of its townships, Heping (和平彝族乡) and Gong'an (共安彝族乡), are Yi ethnic townships. Honghua Industrial (红华实业), the former Plant 814 of the China National Nuclear Corporation (中核集团), lies in Heping.
What to see
The Dadu River Jinkou Grand Canyon (大渡河金口大峡谷) is a national geopark, a national water-conservancy scenic area and a national 4A scenic area. The Railway Corps Museum (铁道兵博物馆), which the district government calls the only museum in China devoted to the army's railway troops, stands inside the gorge. Guancunba station (关村坝站) on the Chengdu–Kunming railway (成昆铁路) is built in the Jinkouhe gorge (金口河峡谷).
The Dawashan wetland area (大瓦山湿地), a national wetland park, is promoted by the district as a "natural ecology museum".
History
Jinkouhe was once the second district of Ebian Yi Autonomous County (峨边彝族自治县). In 1978 the provincial authorities split it off as the Jinkouhe Worker-Peasant Demonstration Area, formally set up that August; in 1979 the State Council approved the Jinkouhe Worker-Peasant District, and it became a district of Leshan city in 1985.
Getting oriented
The old Chengdu–Kunming line has 21 kilometres of track and three small stations in the district. The new double-track line, fully opened in late December 2022, crosses 10 kilometres of it with one station, Jinkouhe South (金口河南站). National road G245 also passes through. Local products listed as Chinese geographical indications are Jinkouhe black gastrodia (金口河乌天麻) and Jinkouhe cyathula root (金口河川牛膝).
