A monastery rebuilt
Muli Monastery (木里大寺), in Taoba Township (桃坝乡), was founded in 1656 using the layout of Drepung Monastery (哲蚌寺) in Lhasa (拉萨) as a model. It suffered destruction in 1967 and was rebuilt on the original site in 1982. Earth and timber dominate the construction, with layered courtyards, corridors and painted walls.
Lakes and river valleys
Cundong Haizi (寸冬海子), also called Changhai Lake (长海子), lies on Kangwu Mountain (康坞山), northwest of the county seat. Mountains enclose the lake, with forest, grass and summer wildflowers around it. Across Muli, the Yalong (雅砻江), Muli (木里河) and Shuiluo (水洛河) rivers run broadly north to south through narrow, deeply incised valleys.
