Hualien City 花蓮市

Hualien City (花蓮市) combines a Pacific waterfront with railway remains and Japanese-style historic buildings. Pacific Park (太平洋公園) connects its northern and southern seaside areas, while cultural sites occupy older buildings within the city.

Wooden buildings and railway history

Pine Garden (松園別館) stands among old pines and contains a Japanese-style historic building used for cultural activities. The Railway Culture Park (鐵道文化園區) preserves early railway facilities, old buildings and a steam locomotive. Near the Meilun River (美崙溪), the General’s House complex (將軍府) consists of Japanese-style wooden dormitories, with shaded grounds and corridors.

Markets and sweets

Dongdamen Night Market (東大門夜市) includes an indigenous-food street and stalls serving grilled pork. Local mochi (麻糬) has chewy rice dough around fillings such as peanut, red bean and sesame. Hualien sweet-potato cakes (花蓮薯) are made by steaming and mashing sweet potatoes, cooking the filling, shaping it by hand and baking it at a low temperature.
