Around Liyu Lake
The lake lies about 18 kilometres from Hualien City (花蓮市), with mountains on three sides. Its water deepens towards the east, reaching about ten metres near the eastern shore. A roughly five-kilometre road circles the lake and links its northern and southern recreation areas, with a dedicated cycle lane.
Wetland and woodland
A constructed wetland on the western side helps purify wastewater entering the lake; the treatment system was completed in 2011. Wetland plants also provide habitat for birds and insects. The lakeside is associated with firefly watching from April to early May. Nearby to the south, Chinan National Forest Recreation Area (池南國家森林遊樂區) preserves forestry machinery and displays about timber transport.
