A village among surrounding hills
Han settlers arrived at Huazhai more than 300 years ago. They saw its enclosing hills as petals around a flower’s centre and built near that centre, giving the settlement its floral name. It was later called Zhongshe because of its central position among Wangan Island’s four villages. The Zeng family house (曾家古厝) has scroll-shaped windows and exposed red-brick window bars forming the family name’s Chinese character.
Dongji’s sea cliffs
Dongji once served as a transfer point for sea trade between Taiwan and Penghu. Its black-and-white lighthouse stands in the island’s north, while remains of former Japanese artillery quarters lie in the northeast. Steep columnar-basalt cliffs edge much of the island, with a broad wave-cut platform locally called Daping (大坪).
