East District 東區

East District (東區) in Taichung brings together industrial buildings, religious landmarks and market streets. Lecheng Temple (樂成宮), dedicated to Mazu and established during the Qing Qianlong period, is a designated municipal historic site on Hanxi Street (旱溪街).

Sugar industry and collections

The former Imperial Sugar Company Taichung office (帝國製糖廠臺中營業所) became a listed historic building in 2016 and reopened in 2019 for industrial-culture displays and other new uses. The district’s Xintiandi Western Museum (新天地西洋博物館) occupies a converted restaurant, with European collections and ceiling murals rendered in three-dimensional effects.

Books and market food

Hanxi Night Market (旱溪夜市) has streets organised around different stall themes; pineapple ice and crisp spring rolls feature in the tourism bureau’s food suggestions. Ruicheng Bookstore (瑞成書局) specialises in religion, humanities, traditional divination and health-related books. Jingwu and Taichung railway stations serve the district.
