A pangolin tradition
Local lore associates Litoudian’s feng shui with a pangolin. Residents stamp their wooden clogs during the Dragon Boat Festival (端午節), symbolically waking the pangolin so that its underground activity can help prepare farmland. The custom carries an agricultural story into the old street’s festival life.
Jute leaves and fibre
Mawei soup (麻芛湯) uses tender jute leaves that are selected, rubbed and rinsed, then cooked with sweet potato and thickened. Jute bark also supplied fibre for ropes, canvas and sacks. The Mawei Culture Museum (麻芛文化館), established in 2004 on the fifth floor of Wanhe Temple’s cultural building (萬和宮文化大樓), introduces Litoudian’s history and jute culture.
