Three building periods
The complex includes prison-officer quarters built in 1915, a martial-arts hall from 1937 and detention-centre dormitories constructed in the 1950s. In 2023, the Ministry of Culture established the comics museum’s preparatory office here as part of a project to reuse the prison buildings.
Inside the martial-arts hall
The Taichung Prison Martial Arts Hall (臺中刑務所演武場) was used by prison guards to practise judo and kendo. Its wooden floor incorporated springs for resilience. Large jars beneath the kendo side amplified sound, while the judo side used additional springs to cushion practice. The complex also contains the former warden’s residence and bathhouse.
