Deng clothing
Traditional men’s clothing includes a long, open-front waistcoat without a collar or buttons, sometimes accompanied by a shawl crossed over the chest. Younger men use white headbands and older men black ones. Women’s short, predominantly black tops carry coloured stripes; their ankle-length tubular skirts have two layers, secured with cloth ties. Carved silver hairpins decorate hair gathered on top of the head.
Silver and woven bags
Silver ornaments are prominent in Deng dress. Women wear large silver bracelets and chest ornaments, including lantern-shaped pieces associated with good fortune and linked, pierced silver coins. Colourful cotton shoulder bags are carried by both men and women, with pierced coins woven into their straps.
