Nangxian 朗县

Nangxian (朗县) occupies southwestern Nyingchi (林芝). The Yarlung Tsangpo (雅鲁藏布江) crosses it from west to east, between the northern slopes of the Himalayas (喜马拉雅山脉) and the southern slopes of the Nyainqentanglha range (念青唐古拉山脉). These mountains form a large V-shaped valley.

Chillies and local sauces

Chillies have been cultivated here for a century. The local Xiaoniujiao variety (小牛角) is particularly well known: fresh peppers are firm, pungent and aromatic, while dried ones are bright red with moderate heat. Alongside dried chillies and chilli powder, local processed foods include roasted-chilli sauce, mixed green-and-red chilli sauce, and sauces combining peppers with yak meat or diced chicken.

Apples and walnuts

Apples and walnuts are other local products. Apple varieties include Huangxiangjiao (黄香蕉), Hongyuanshuai (红元帅) and Gala (嘎啦). Lhasa Daily describes the fruit as crisp, juicy and sweet-tart. Much of the apple-growing described by Lhasa Daily takes place in household courtyards.
