Cuogao’s houses

Cuogao old village (错高古村落) stands on the lake’s northern shore, enclosed by mountains on three sides. Traditional houses have stone-and-timber frames: livestock occupy the ground floor, people live above, and an attic stores fodder and food. A small mani chapel (玛尼拉康) in the village centre contains a large prayer wheel. The remains of a stupa stand to the south.

Waterfalls beyond the lake

Zhala Gorge’s waterfalls (扎拉沟瀑布群) lie about 25 kilometres north of the lake’s island. The route through Jieba Village (结巴村) and Cuogao reaches numerous falls, with their number increasing during the rainy season. Large cascades, smaller falls and stretches of wetland share the gorge.
