Palace and watchtower
The complex has two connected parts: a multi-storey building at the front and a tall square watchtower behind. Built with earth and stone, the main structure faces west, with the tower at its eastern centre. Local tradition compares the mountain’s shape to a hind’s rear leg, explaining the palace’s name.
Legends painted on the walls
Interior murals depict the monkey-to-human origin story associated with Gongbori Mountain (贡布日山), along with stories of the first king, first building and first cultivated field. Tradition attributes Yumbulagang’s foundation to Nyatri Tsenpo (聂赤赞普). Fields below the rear of the palace are associated with Tibet’s first royal farmland, beside remains described as those of its earliest village.
