A monastery among clouds
Kaju, founded in 1570, belongs to the Nyingma school (宁玛派). It stands on the wooded summit called Jiapujin (佳普晋) behind Lhakang, where cloud can hide and reveal its red walls and projecting eaves. The name combines words for rock and water. Surrounding paths offer different views of the monastery and its mountain setting.
Sekhar Guthok’s murals
Sekhar Guthok is marked by a square, nine-storey building whose name means the nine-storey prince’s fortress. Its murals include portraits of Marpa (玛尔巴) and Milarepa (米拉热巴), attributed to Menla Döndrup Gyatso (门拉顿珠嘉措). Paintings of different periods survive across the tower, assembly hall and chapels, alongside handwritten scriptures and Buddhist ritual objects.
