A sacred world in miniature
The central Utse Hall (乌孜大殿) represents Mount Meru (须弥山). Surrounding halls and subsidiary buildings stand for the four great continents and eight smaller continents, while a circular boundary wall symbolises the encircling iron mountains. Four stupas are coloured red, white, green and black. The three storeys of the central hall use Tibetan, Han Chinese and Indian architectural styles in ascending order.
History along the corridor
A 92-metre mural sequence in the central hall’s middle-level corridor presents Tibetan history from ancient legends to the ninth Dalai Lama (九世达赖喇嘛). Other surviving objects include the stone Buddhist oath inscription to the left of the hall entrance and a bronze bell suspended beneath the corridor roof.
