The shape of the royal tombs
The tombs were built during the sixth to ninth centuries. Most burial mounds have flat tops, with either square or trapezoidal outlines. Their construction combines rammed earth, timber and stone, with logs reinforcing the layers. Many rise more than ten metres above the surrounding ground.
Carving on the memorial stele
The Tride Songtsen tomb stele (赤德松赞墓碑) stands on a stone tortoise base and has a separate cap and inscribed shaft. Its decoration includes flying celestial figures, sun and moon motifs, dragons, intertwined snakes and lotus forms. Old Tibetan writing appears below the celestial symbols. Near Tomb Six, a surviving seated stone lion has a raised head, bared teeth and a curled mane.
