The tropic and Hani heritage
The Tropic of Cancer Marker Park (北回归线标志园) combines a geographical landmark with astronomy education. Mojiang also has a park devoted to twin culture and has held its international twins festival since 2005. The county formerly bore the name Talang (他郎); it was renamed Mojiang in 1915, after the Amo River (阿墨江), and became an autonomous county in 1979.
Festivals and purple rice
Hani earthen-roof houses and festivals such as Shiyuenian, the tenth-month New Year (十月年), form part of Mojiang’s local culture. In Longba Town (龙坝镇), a 2023 Shiyuenian celebration brought Hani singing and dancing together with a long-street communal feast. Mojiang purple rice (墨江紫米) is a geographical-indication protected product; purple-rice wine is another named local food product.
