Tea routes and the unity monument
Ning’er’s identity is closely connected with Pu’er tea and the Tea Horse Road (茶马古道). The county government describes it as a tea origin and distribution centre and the starting point of the old trading route. The Ethnic Unity Oath Monument (民族团结誓词碑) stands in Ethnic Unity Park (民族团结园). On New Year’s Day 1951, representatives of twenty-six ethnic groups gathered for an oath ceremony; forty-eight representatives signed the monument. It is a nationally protected cultural heritage site.
Schools and local people
Hani (哈尼族), Yi (彝族), Dai (傣族) and Han (汉族) communities are among Ning’er’s established residents. Pu’er Middle School (普洱中学) was Yunnan’s first school to offer the new educational curriculum. Mohei Middle School (磨黑中学) is a provincial patriotic education site.
