An old weir and riverside trees
Tongji Weir (通济堰) was built in 505 during the Liang dynasty and is recognised as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure. The surrounding landscape includes large old camphor trees, riverside buildings and lanes paved with stone slabs. Water, woodland and village streets form the backdrop to the area’s cultural life.
Painting and old-town architecture
An official cultural feature describes the local landscape as nurturing a painting movement known as the local Barbizon school (巴比松画派). At Dagangtou (大港头), Jiangbin Road (江滨路) retains the character of a traditional Jiangnan town: its buildings are predominantly two-storey structures of timber and blue brick. Cultural businesses and artists gather around this riverside street.
