Qingtian 青田县

Qingtian (青田县) has a longstanding identity built around carved stone. The relationship between mineral resources and skilled handcraft connects its raw material, seal stones and finished sculptures, with Shankou (山口) and Hecheng (鹤城) forming important centres of the tradition.

Stone and skilled work

Pyrophyllite-rich minerals provide the principal material for Qingtian stone carving. A county industrial plan written in2009 records quarrying around Shankou and sculpture-making in both Shankou and Hecheng. Raw stones, seal stones and carved pieces are distinct strands of the local stone industry. Small handcraft workshops have been part of its production history.

A county with an old name

Qingtian was established as a county in 711 during the Tang dynasty. Historical accounts explain its name through the nearby Qingtian Mountain (青田山), while another recorded tradition refers to locally abundant plants used for blue-green dye. These different accounts form part of the county’s own historical memory.
