Longquan 龙泉市

Longquan (龙泉市) has two closely linked craft identities: celadon ceramics and sword-making. Their long histories connect the city with green-glazed vessels, metalworking techniques and cultural meanings that extend beyond the everyday uses of the objects themselves.

Celadon’s green glaze

Longquan celadon developed a distinctive green-glaze style during the early Northern Song period and reached a high point in the Southern Song. Powder-green and plum-green glazes are characteristic colours. Vessels include ewers, bottles, bowls and plates; later Yuan-period production brought heavier forms and wider overseas trade.

Sword-making traditions

Longquan swords combine a flexible yet strong blade with carefully worked decoration. Stars and dragon designs appear on examples of the craft. Traditional sword production uses iron-rich material, water for quenching and stone for sharpening. In 1956, local sword artisans were organised into production groups and a cooperative, helping revive this inherited handcraft.
