What to see

The Orchid Pavilion (兰亭) lies at the foot of Mount Lanzhu (兰渚山), 13 kilometres south-west of central Shaoxing, in Lanting subdistrict (兰亭街道). It was the garden home of the Eastern Jin calligrapher Wang Xizhi (王羲之), who wrote the Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Poems (兰亭集序) at a gathering of more than 40 scholars there in 353. Legend says King Goujian of Yue (越王勾践) grew orchids on the spot. The present layout was rebuilt in 1548, and it includes a goose pond (鹅池) where Wang Xizhi is said to have kept geese.

Also in Lanting subdistrict, the Yinshan royal tomb of Yue (印山越国王陵) is a Spring and Autumn period royal tomb on the summit of Mount Yin (印山), with its burial chamber cut into the rock. It was excavated from 1996 and listed as a national protected site in 2001, and it was the first royal tomb of the Yue state found in China. A protective hall over the tomb was part of the conservation plan put into effect in 1999.

Anchang (安昌), 7 kilometres north of Keqiao subdistrict (柯桥街道), was listed as a national historic and cultural town in 2005; its name goes back to the late Tang. The Keyan scenic area (柯岩风景区), 8 kilometres west of central Shaoxing, joins Keyan, Jian Lake (鉴湖) and Lu Town (鲁镇) and includes the Tiangong Great Buddha (天工大佛) and the Cloud Bone (云骨).

Keqiao is also home to the China Textile City (中国轻纺城), a cloth market begun in the 1980s that the district government calls the first specialised market in China to carry the country's name. The government also describes it as Asia's largest textile market, and says a quarter of the world's fabric is traded there each year.

Food and local products

Brewing is a well-developed local industry, and two nationally known brands, Kuaijishan (会稽山) and Pagoda (塔牌), come from the district. In Anchang the Renchang sauce works (仁昌酱园) makes "mother-and-son" soy sauce; the traditional brewing method of Shaoxing soy sauce is on Zhejiang's intangible-heritage list.
