The sound of Yue opera
Yue opera originated in Shengzhou in 1906 and developed from male performance towards a tradition strongly associated with women performers. Singing carries much of its emotional expression, and romantic stories are a familiar theme. The museum presents the art’s development and distinctive features, and visitors at a2025 cultural event heard performances including You Shanglin (游上林).
Crafts in an old town
Chongren preserves a protected group of old buildings and stone-paved streets. Visitors at that2025 event saw clay modelling, purple-clay work, stone painting and dragon dancing. Liangchen Ancestral Hall (良臣公祠) is another local setting associated with encounters with Yue opera.
