Setting and landscape
The district sits where the central Sichuan hills meet the parallel ridges and valleys of eastern Sichuan, and most of it lies between 300 and 450 metres. The highest point, 711.3 metres, is Sancengyan (三层岩), the main peak of Gufo Mountain (古佛山). Almost all of its 151 streams drain to the Tuo River (沱江); the Laixi River (濑溪河) runs 51.5 kilometres through the district.
History
In 758, under the Tang, Changzhou (昌州) prefecture and Changyuan County (昌元县) were created with a shared seat at Shiziba (狮子坝) in present-day Panlong town (盘龙镇), which the district government treats as the start of county rule here. The Ming founder set up Rongchang County in December 1373, and the State Council turned the county into a district in 2015.
Food and local products
Three Rongchang crafts are on the national intangible-heritage list. Rongchang pottery (荣昌陶器), made around Anfu (安富) from clay dug on Yayu Mountain (鸦屿山), dates back to the Song dynasty more than 800 years ago. Its wares are either unglazed nijinghuo (泥精货) or glazed youzihuo (釉子货), and the heritage listing names it among China's four famous potteries.
Rongchang folding fans (荣昌折扇) date from the Northern Song and were sent to court as tribute under the Ming Jiajing emperor. Under Guangxu, late in the Qing, the county town had more than 200 fan shops; black paper fans and palm-bamboo fans are the most typical. Rongchang ramie cloth (荣昌夏布), woven mainly in Panlong, was known as "Shu cloth" (蜀布) in the Han and was sent as tribute under the Tang and Song.
Getting oriented
The Chengdu–Chongqing railway (成渝铁路) and expressway (成渝高速公路) cross the district from east to west. By expressway it is 93 kilometres from Chongqing and 246 kilometres from Chengdu (成都), and the Chengdu–Chongqing high-speed railway (成渝高铁) opened in December 2015.
