Setting and landscape
The district lies in the parallel ridge-and-valley country of eastern Sichuan, where upfolded rock forms ridges and downfolds form valleys. The low mountains around Nanshan, Huangjueya (黄桷垭) and Guangyang (广阳) mostly stand above 500 metres, topped by Chuntianling (春天岭) at 681.5 metres. Chinese Wikipedia records a humid, cloudy climate with about 68 foggy days a year.
What to see
The Chongqing Anti-Japanese War Relics Museum (重庆抗战遗址博物馆) occupies the Huangshan (黄山) villa group, begun in the 1920s by the comprador Huang Yunjie (黄云阶); it is a national key cultural relics protection unit and a 4A scenic area. Laojun Cave (老君洞), a Taoist temple first built in the late Sui or early Tang and rebuilt in 1480, and Tushan Temple (涂山寺), which began as a shrine to Yu the Great (大禹) who by legend married into the Tushan clan here, are both municipal protected sites. Wenfeng Pagoda (文峰塔), on the summit of Wenfeng Hill at Huangjueya, has seven storeys and stands more than 28 metres high; work on it began in 1850. The writer Sanmao (三毛) was born at Huangjueya in 1943, and her former home stands beside the old Huangjueya path.
For views, the Yikeshu viewing park (一棵树观景园) sits halfway up Zhenwu Mountain (真武山) at over 500 metres, facing the city centre across the river, and the Big Golden Eagle (大金鹰) sculpture by Ye Yushan (叶毓山), finished in 1998, stands on Yaoying Rock (鹞鹰岩). Nanshan Botanical Garden (南山植物园) was founded in 1959.
Along the Yangtze, Nanbin Road (南滨路) runs for about 24.9 kilometres. Longmenhao Old Street (龙门浩老街) has more than 200 buildings, 18 of them listed as fine historic buildings, and is the setting of "Moon over Longmenhao" (龙门浩月), one of the twelve ancient views of Bayu (巴渝十二景). Danzishi Old Street (弹子石老街), opened in 2018, presents the treaty-port era on nine terraced levels.
Food
Nanshan spring-water chicken (南山泉水鸡), numbing, spicy and tender, has its own restaurant street at Huangjueya. Along Nanbin Road, the Tongyuandao (铜元道) and Yabadong (雅巴洞) area is known for crayfish, rabbit, hotpot and barbecue.
