Getting oriented
The district government gives Didao an area of 614 square kilometres. Chengzihe District (城子河区) lies to the east; Linkou County (林口县) and Mashan District (麻山区) border it to the northwest and southwest; Jiguan District (鸡冠区), Hengshan District (恒山区) and the northern edge of Mashan lie to the south; and to the north it meets Xingnong Township (兴农乡) of Jidong County (鸡东县).
Didao is divided into two rural townships, Lanling (兰岭乡) and Didaohe (滴道河乡), and four urban subdistricts, Dongxing (东兴), Kuangli (矿里), Ximeichang (洗煤厂, literally 'coal-washing plant') and Datonggou (大通沟). Chinese Wikipedia notes that the Ha–Mi railway (哈密铁路) and China National Highway 201 pass through the district, that coal dominates its mineral output and that livestock leads its farming.
History
Chinese Wikipedia's article on Jixi dates the discovery of the Didao coalfield to 1934. In June 1935 the South Manchuria Railway Company (南满洲铁道株式会社) and the Manchuria Coal Mining Company (满洲炭矿株式会社) contested the right to develop it; the Manchukuo government put the mine under the coal company's direct management, and the company then founded the Mishan Coal Mining Company (密山炭矿株式会社) at Didao Street, today's Didao District.
Construction of the Didao coal washery began in the autumn of 1938 and it went into production in August 1943; the same article describes it as the largest coal washery in Asia at that time. On 9 August 1945, with Soviet troops approaching the mining area, the head of the Didao mine ordered the Hengshan, Didao, Chengzihe and Muling (穆棱) coal mines and the Liumao (柳毛) graphite mine destroyed. On 18 December 1956 the State Council decided to create the prefecture-level city of Jixi with five districts, Didao among them.
