Setting and landscape

The district covers 708 square kilometres. Jidong County (鸡东县) lies to the east, Lishu District (梨树区) to the west and Jiguan District (鸡冠区), seat of the city government, to the north, while to the south Hengshan meets Muling (穆棱市) and Russia. Forest covers 34,000 hectares, or 58 per cent of the district, and the district government reports growing forest-floor cultivation of ginseng, gastrodia tuber (天麻) and wood-ear fungus, along with sika deer farming.

Below ground, the district government lists 42 proven minerals, including about 650 million tonnes of coal and 370 million tonnes of graphite. It says the district's high-grade flake graphite ranks first in Asia for reserves and grade, and that Hengshan is known as the 'city of coal' and the 'city of graphite'.

History

Chinese Wikipedia's article on Jixi traces regular coal mining in the Jixi area to Hengshan. A merchant from Fengtian (奉天), Yuan Dazhang (袁大章), founded the Mixi Coal Mining Company (密西煤矿公司) in Harbin in September 1914, and in 1916 the company moved its workings to what is now the No. 1 old shaft of the Hengshan mine (恒山矿老一井), which the article treats as the start of formal coal production in Jixi. The Hengshan mine was among those the head of the Didao (滴道) mine ordered destroyed on 9 August 1945 as Soviet troops approached, and when the State Council decided on 18 December 1956 to create Jixi city, Hengshan was one of its five districts.

What to see

The district government says its mine park (矿山公园) is one of China's first batch of 28 mine parks and holds a national 3A scenic-area rating; the park presents coal-mining culture and history. The same introduction names Jingang Mountain (金刚山) and Siping Mountain (四平山) as other local sights.

Highlights

  • Hengshan Mine Park 矿山公园: One of China's first batch of 28 mine parks, rated a national 3A scenic area, presenting coal-mining culture and history.
  • Hengshan mine No. 1 old shaft 恒山矿老一井: Site to which the Mixi Coal Mining Company moved in 1916, regarded as the start of formal coal production in Jixi.
