Setting and landscape

Mashan is mostly mountains and hills; a local saying describes it as 'eight parts mountain, half a part water and one and a half parts farmland'. It has one subdistrict, Mashan Subdistrict (麻山街道), where the district government sits, and one town, Mashan Town (麻山镇).

History

The district was set up in 1957. The district government notes that the area was a main operating ground of the Fifth Army of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army, and names local resistance figures such as Chen Zhenjiang (陈振江) and Zhao Liankui (赵连奎).

The Mashan coal mine opened in 1939, was taken over by the democratic government in November 1946, and produced 19.4 million tonnes of coal between 1946 and 1983 before moving its operations in the 1980s to the Donghai and Xinghua mines. Mashan railway station, in Mashan Subdistrict on the Linmi railway (林密铁路), dates from 1943. Among recent industrial projects, a low-sulphur expandable-graphite plant has gone into production and a graphene project is under way.

What to see

Jilong Lake (吉龙湖), at Longshan village (龙山村) in Mashan Town, is the village's main draw; the Ministry of Culture and Tourism describes its clear water and good ecology bringing visitors in every season. Longshan was named a national model of village civility in 2022, and its farm-produce brands, including Longshan hazelnuts, Jilong Lake rice, Longshan wood-ear fungus and Longshan honey, are sold to visitors. In the district town, new parks and flower-field landscaping have been added, and the district hosts a Mashan Music Season among its cultural events.
