Setting and landscape

Forest covers about 70 per cent of the city, with valuable timber trees such as yew, Amur cork tree (黄菠萝) and Manchurian walnut (核桃楸). Protected areas include the Muling Northeast Yew National Nature Reserve (穆棱东北红豆杉国家级自然保护区), the provincial Liufeng Lake Nature Reserve (六峰湖自然保护区) and part of the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park. Muling has wind farms at Daimagou (代马沟) and Shiwenzi (十文字) and is known as China's home of wind power.

History and culture

Two ancient sites, the Xiaosifang Mountain Fort (小四方山城) and Liangtai Mountain (粮台山), are described by the Mudanjiang city government as being under first-grade national protection. Muling became a county-level city in 1995.

The Mudanjiang city government calls Muling a home of song lyrics. Jiang Kairu (蒋开儒), who wrote the words for the songs "The Story of Spring" (春天的故事) and "Into a New Era" (走进新时代), and Song Qingsong (宋青松), lyricist of "When I Grow Up I Became You" (长大后我就成了你), both came from here.

Food and local products

Muling is known as China's home of sun-cured tobacco and of soybeans. Soybeans, maize, black wood ear fungus and sea buckthorn are grown to national green-food raw-material standards, and beef cattle are raised. Wood products and flax spinning are among the industries the city is building up.

Getting oriented

The city government sits in Bamiantong town (八面通镇). Muling lies in the triangle formed by Mudanjiang, the coal-and-power city of Jixi (鸡西) and the border port of Suifenhe (绥芬河), about 70 kilometres from each. The Jixi–Tumen railway and the electrified Mudanjiang–Suifenhe railway meet here; the Binsui railway (滨绥铁路) and National Highways 301 and 331 also pass through.
