History
The district was set up in 1956 as Luoyang's earliest built-up area. The old town keeps the historic quarters of the southeast and southwest corners (东西南隅历史文化街区), which the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development put on its second list of reusable practice in protecting historic districts, and the Henan Prefecture Confucian Temple (河南府文庙), where the National Cultural Heritage Administration has approved a plan for its surroundings.
What to see
The district government builds its tourism work around getting Luoyi Ancient City (洛邑古城) a national 5A rating. The district government groups it with Ziwei City (紫微城) and the Zhougongli (周公里), Suitangli (隋唐里) and Xiaochangli (校场里) quarters, where it has set up themed scenes in Sui-Tang, Republican-era and industrial styles; the district counts more than 1,300 hanfu costume shops.
The Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum (洛阳古墓博物馆), on Airport Road in Mangshan subdistrict, opened in 1987 and is a national first-grade museum. Its eastern galleries display 25 tombs of the Western Han to the Song and Jin from the Heluo region (河洛地区), including the painted Western Han tomb of Bu Qianqiu (卜千秋). On the west side is the Jingling (景陵), tomb of the Northern Wei Emperor Xuanwu, excavated in a rescue dig approved in 1993 and listed in 2006, as part of the Mangshan tombs, among national key cultural relics protection sites.
Merchants from Shanxi and Shaanxi trading in Luoyang paid for the Shanxi-Shaanxi Guild Hall (洛阳山陕会馆). Its layout was in place between 1711 and 1721, and it keeps its gate, stage tower, worship hall, main hall and screen wall; it became a national key cultural relics protection site in 2006 and has housed the Luoyang Wanli Tea Road Museum (洛阳万里茶道博物馆) since April 2023.
At No. 1 Beidajie (北大街), the Zushi Temple (祖师庙), begun in the late Yuan or early Ming and first dedicated to Laozi, has a Yuan-style timber frame in its main hall. Also a national key site since 2006, the temple has held the Luoyang Laozi Memorial Hall (洛阳老子纪念馆) since 2012, with murals of Laozi's life including his post as archive keeper in Luoyang.
Food and local products
The district's rural revitalisation plan promotes peony growing and scorpion (全蝎) farming. The Luoyang peony cultivation system was named a Henan agricultural heritage system in 2024.
