Fengxiang District 凤翔区

Fengxiang District (凤翔区) occupies the western Guanzhong Plain (关中平原), northeast of Baoji (宝鸡). Formerly called Yong (雍), it was a Qin capital for 327 years; East Lake (东湖) and the clay-sculpture village of Liuying (六营) represent two further strands of its cultural landscape.

What to see

East Lake is a classical garden, while other named destinations include the Baoji Pre-Qin Cemetery Museum (宝鸡先秦陵园博物馆) and Liuying Folk Village (六营民俗村). Fengxiang is also where Su Shi (苏轼) began his official career. Liuying and nearby villages are centres for the painted clay figures called nihuo (泥货), or clay wares.

Local crafts

The figures fall into three broad groups: animal toys, often representing the twelve zodiac animals; hanging plaques with faces or tiger and lion heads; and standing figures from history and folklore. Makers use black clay, white powder and animal-hide glue, shaping pieces with moulds. Forms are simplified and exaggerated, with elaborate decoration and bright colours.
