History
The county government presents Qishan as the land where the Zhou dynasty was founded and where the Duke of Zhou (周公) set out its rites and music. It counts about 500 recorded heritage sites, from Yangshao and Longshan remains to the Fengchu (凤雏) site, and among the finds from Qishan are the Mao Gong ding (毛公鼎), the Da Yu ding (大盂鼎) and tens of thousands of pieces of Western Zhou oracle bones.
At the Zhougongmiao site (周公庙遗址), also called the Fenghuang Mountain site, on the southern foot of Fenghuang Mountain (凤凰山) north-west of the county town, excavators have taken out more than 11,000 Western Zhou oracle-bone pieces, over 800 of them inscribed. The site has been provisionally identified as a burial ground of the Duke of Zhou's family.
In 234 the Shu Han chancellor Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮) camped at Wuzhangyuan (五丈原) on his fifth northern campaign, faced the Wei army there for more than 100 days, and died there that year.
