History

A county was carved out of Shu county here in 700 and renamed Lingchi (灵池县) in 742; in 1026 it became Lingquan (灵泉县), and a brick of 1219 bearing that name has been found. The county was abolished in 1373, and in 1513 the Ming set up a patrol office at Longquan and a post station called Longquanyi. Longquanyi District was created within Chengdu in July 1960, and in January 1976 nine communes of the Luodai area were moved into it from Jianyang County (简阳县).

What to see

The Ming Shu royal tombs (明蜀王陵) are more than ten tombs of Ming princes of Shu and their consorts, spread over loess hills with the tomb of Prince Xi (僖王陵) at their centre; most lie in the Shiling (十陵) and Honghe (洪河) areas, and the Ming Shu Royal Tombs Museum (明蜀王陵博物馆) stands in Shiling. The group became a national protected site in 1996. The Ming founder Zhu Yuanzhang (朱元璋) made his eleventh son, Zhu Chun (朱椿), Prince of Shu with his palace in Chengdu, and some features of these tombs exceed the rank of other princely burials.

Luodai, in the north of the district, is a 4A scenic area whose old street is laid out as one street with seven lanes, mostly in Qing-style buildings. Legend says the name comes from a jade belt that the Shu Han ruler Liu Shan (刘禅) dropped into the octagonal well beside the town. More than 90 per cent of its residents are Hakka and still speak Hakka. Its four guild halls, those of Guangdong, Huguang, Jiangxi and Northern Sichuan (川北), are listed together as a national protected site. The district also holds the Northern Zhou stele and cliff carvings (北周文王碑及摩崖造像), another national protected site, and Shijing Temple (石经寺), a city-level protected site. Dong'an Lake Sports Park (东安湖体育公园) was the main venue of the 31st Summer World University Games.
