A community-built crossing

In 1731, residents raised funds for a crossing because the riverbed obstructed travel between Zaoqiao and Toufen (頭份). They called the resulting structure Dengyun Bridge (登雲橋), also known as Long Bridge (長橋); the act of building it supplied the township’s name.

Zheng Han’s memorial trail

Zheng Han Trail (鄭漢步道), beside Provincial Highway 1 (台一線) in Tanwen Village (談文村), is about two kilometres out and back. Railway sleepers form steps among camphor trees, casuarinas and wild flowering shrubs. A hilltop monument commemorates Zheng Han (鄭漢), a young man who drowned after rescuing children from the Zhonggang River (中港溪). From the monument, the view extends across the river plain towards the Taiwan Strait (台灣海峽).
