The strawberry crop
In 1958, Lai Yuntian (賴雲添) and fellow farmers brought strawberry plants back to Dahu, after Lai had encountered the crop while visiting relatives the previous year. The Harunoka variety (春香) was introduced from Japan in 1979. Its large fruit and early harvest helped encourage further planting, followed by visitor-picking farms.
Strawberry Culture Museum
The Dahu Strawberry Culture Museum (大湖草莓文化館) explains strawberry ecology and local cultivation history on its second and third floors. Its fifth-floor garden has a strawberry-shaped pavilion and flower beds. A neighbouring winery produces strawberry fruit wine, ice cream and cakes. The township’s main strawberry season runs from November through April, when visitors come to pick the fruit.
