Baishatun’s temple
Baishatun Gongtian Temple (白沙屯拱天宮) has elaborate multicoloured cut-and-paste ornament on its roof and gold-leaf decoration beneath the outer eaves. Its history began with a flexible-bodied Mazu (媽祖) image worshipped in private homes during the Qianlong reign. A temple was built for the image in the second year of the Tongzhi reign, 1863.
The walking pilgrimage
The Baishatun Mazu pilgrimage to Beigang (北港) has continued for more than a century. Participants make the journey on foot, with the palanquin determining their route. Many devotees understand its movements as divine guidance. Mutual support among walkers and offerings of water and food from people along the route are part of the pilgrimage tradition.
