School dormitories
The Japanese-period dormitories at Shanjiao Elementary School (山腳國小日式宿舍群) are traditional timber buildings from the later years of Japanese rule. Raised floors and ventilation openings help air circulate through the interiors. Wooden corridors, sliding doors and broad windows overlook grassy grounds, while trees shade outdoor tables and seats. The buildings have been adapted for reuse, retaining their distinctive domestic architecture.
Rushes and local food
Triangular rushes grown in Yuanli are woven into hats and mats associated with Dajia (大甲). The town also produces mushrooms; mushroom fish balls are a local speciality. Older three-sided courtyard houses, built from earth and stone, remain within the township.
