Settlement on the plain
Taokas (道卡斯族) people lived here before Han settlement and cultivation began during the Qing dynasty. Pantao neighbourhood (蟠桃里), formerly called Fanpozhuang (番婆莊), preserves a place name associated with that earlier Indigenous presence. Agriculture and industry both developed on the broad river plain.
Luzhunan’s brick courtyards
Luzhunan Old Houses (蘆竹湳古厝) form a traditional farming settlement with more than 300 years of history. More than fifty surviving sanheyuan courtyards make its red brick lanes a maze of older homes. Community activities include handmade paper, cyanotype photographs, bamboo deer weaving and rice foods, alongside traditional games, hand-cranked shaved ice and puffed-rice demonstrations.
