The Lixiping terrace
Lixiping Leisure Agriculture Area (壢西坪休閒農業區) lies north of the town centre, on a long river terrace about 430–470 metres above sea level. Its Hakka (客語) name means a flat terrace west of a deep valley. Settlement and cultivation developed after 1889 through a land-reclamation enterprise.
Changing orchards
Fruit-tree cultivation at Lixiping began in the 1970s, initially with oranges. Disease and declining orange prices encouraged growers to switch to pears, later adding flowers, guavas and starfruit. Across Zhuolan, orchards also produce grapes, citrus and Hengshan pears (橫山梨). Some farms combine cultivation with fruit-picking and other agricultural visitor activities.
