History

Missionary work at Wanjin began in 1861, followed by an earthen church in 1863. Fires and earthquake damage affected that early building. In 1869, Father Liang Fangji (良方濟) acquired woodland for the present church, built in a form inspired by Spanish castles. Pope John Paul II granted it basilica status in 1984.

What to see

The church's appearance reflects repeated rebuilding. The original curved gable became a pointed one, and the bell tower was rebuilt at the central gable. Later alterations also added traditional Chinese painted decoration to the nave ceiling and gave the columns a conspicuous red finish. The interior includes a wooden pulpit and a processional chair for the Virgin Mary.
