Objects and remembered techniques
A cultural project led by Wilang Mawi (韋文豪) and Pisuy Poro (比穗‧保羅) brought photographs of collected objects to elders across Nan’ao’s villages. Ten elders helped identify the objects and explain their stories and contexts. Shell-beaded robes were among the pieces investigated, with aspects of their making still not fully understood.
Collections returning to local conversation
The project culminated in an exhibition at Wuta Elementary School (武塔國小), developed with Academia Sinica’s Institute of Ethnology Museum (中央研究院民族學研究所博物館). Thirty-two exhibited objects came from collections made in the late 1950s. Further fieldwork in the early 1960s produced a two-volume ethnography, The Atayal of Nan’ao (南澳的泰雅人), and additional museum collections.
