A yellow landmark by the beach
Waiao’s service building was designed by architect Kris Yao (姚仁喜). Its bright-yellow form suggests both a paraglider and a large boat, facing Guishan Island (龜山島) beside the beach. A seawall walkway follows the shore, and the indoor café’s large windows frame sea and island views. The beach is associated with surfing, while a nearby hilltop has a paragliding base.
Fish auctions and harbour cooking
Daxi lies near Guishan Island’s fishing grounds. Fish auctions involve shouted bids and hand signals as catches are sold ashore. The harbour’s three-storey exposed-concrete fish-market building contains seafood stalls and shops selling dried products. Local foods include grilled fish, seafood fried noodles and shihua jelly (石花凍).
