Snow mountains and shoreline grassland

The lake’s Tibetan name means “Heavenly Lake.” Namtso lies at about 4,718 metres, with the snow-covered Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains (念青唐古拉山) to the south. Gentler plateau hills lie to the north and west, and grasslands fringe the lake. On Tashi Peninsula (扎西半岛), two large stone pillars stand side by side as Tianmen Stones (天门石), or “Heaven’s Gate Stones.” At the western end, the Hezhang Stones (合掌石) resemble two palms pressed together in prayer.

Geothermal ground at Yangbajain

The springs lie west of Yangbajain Town beside the Qinghai–Tibet Highway (青藏公路). China’s Tibet magazine describes hot springs, boiling springs, hot-water lakes and hydrothermal explosion pits here. Steam rises from the geothermal ground throughout the year.
