Qiduo cave paintings

Qiduo Mountain’s rock paintings (其多山洞穴岩画) occupy two natural caves on Namtso’s western shore. All are painted in red pigment. The first cave contains more than 200 animal, human and symbolic images, added on different occasions. One striking hunting scene places two large, arrow-struck wild yaks beneath three much smaller hunters, making the contrast in scale especially pronounced.

Namtso’s names and beliefs

Namtso’s Tibetan and Mongolian names both mean “heavenly lake.” It is sacred in Bon (苯教) and Tibetan Buddhism. Local mythology presents the lake and Nyainqentanglha Mountain (念青唐古拉山) as a married pair; the lake deity is depicted riding a flying dragon and holding a mirror.
