A mountain of changing forms

The district government likens the southern view to a king on a throne, the western view to a leaping silver lion, the eastern view to a crystal tower and the northern view to a silver curtain. Local religious belief identifies the mountain’s deity as a protector of Buddhist teachings, with surrounding peaks and lakes as attendants.

Monastery and sacred gorge

Barong Monastery (跋绒寺) stands in Barong Valley (跋绒谷) at the mountain’s foot and belongs to the Barom Kagyu tradition (跋绒噶举). Nearby Zhuoma Gorge (卓玛峡谷) has abundant vegetation and religious remains, including old temples, chapels and meditation caves.
