Flowers and wildlife
Rhododendrons flower across the surrounding hills in June and July, in shades of red, pink and white. Tibetan gazelles, foxes and hares occur along the approach to the lake. Temple ruins and stone walls are scattered on the high slopes along that route.
Shaogang’s cliff images
The Shaogang rock carvings (少岗石刻造像群) occupy a cliff south of Langtong Village (朗通村), beside the north-flowing Chongba River (冲巴河). Eight Buddhist figures extend across a rock face more than forty metres long. They include Maitreya (弥勒), Tara (度母), and Shakyamuni (释迦牟尼) with two disciples. The latter sits on a lotus pedestal with broad, flattened petals; the carvings’ shallow, evenly cut lines remain a distinctive feature.
